How Far Ahead Should You Book Your Movers?

Booking Windows That Actually Get You the Date You Want
“How soon do I need to book?” doesn’t have one universal answer — it depends heavily on when you’re moving and what day of the week you want. Here’s a realistic breakdown so you’re not scrambling, or booking further ahead than you actually need to.

General booking windows

Situation Book this far ahead
Weekday move, off-peak season (Oct–Apr) 1–2 weeks
Weekend move, off-peak season 2–3 weeks
Weekday move, peak season (May–Sept) 3–4 weeks
Weekend move, peak season 4–6 weeks
Long-distance / interstate move 4–6 weeks, any season
Month-end dates (any season) Add 1–2 extra weeks to the above

Why weekends and month-end dates book out first

Most people want to move without missing work, which pushes demand toward Fridays, Saturdays, and the last few days of the month (when many leases turn over). That concentrated demand means those dates have the least flexibility and the earliest booking cutoffs.

The easiest way to get more flexibility

If your schedule allows it, a Tuesday–Thursday move in the middle of the month is almost always the easiest date to book on short notice — sometimes with just a few days’ lead time.

What can still be booked last-minute

Even during busy periods, cancellations happen and smaller crews sometimes have last-minute openings. If your timeline is tight, it’s worth calling directly rather than assuming a date is unavailable — a small local move can sometimes be accommodated faster than a full-home relocation.

Before you call to book

Have this ready

  • Your target move date, plus 1–2 backup dates
  • A rough sense of your home size and inventory
  • Whether you’ll need packing services in addition to moving
  • Any HOA or building notice requirements that might affect timing
Booking windows vary by company size, season, and local demand. These ranges reflect typical availability but aren’t a guarantee for any specific date.
