7 Hidden Fees That Show Up on Moving Day
Fuel surcharge
Common on long-distance moves, and occasionally on local moves during periods of high fuel prices. Ask whether it’s built into your quote or added separately at delivery.
Shuttle fee
If a full-size moving truck can’t reach your building — narrow streets, weight-restricted bridges, tight complexes — a smaller shuttle vehicle transfers your items instead. This adds time and cost.
Stairs fee
Some companies charge per flight of stairs beyond the first, especially for heavier furniture. Ask exactly where the cutoff is and whether it applies at both addresses.
Long carry fee
Triggered when movers have to carry items a significant distance from the truck to your door — common in complexes without close parking or in gated communities with restricted truck access.
Bulky item fee
Pianos, safes, pool tables, and large gym equipment often carry a flat add-on due to their weight and the extra handling time and equipment involved.
Wait-time fee
If the crew is delayed by something outside their control — a blocked elevator, missing keys, a locked loading dock — some companies bill for that wait time. Ask how this is handled.

This one isn’t charged by your mover at all — it’s charged by your apartment or condo building for elevator use and staff time. Ask your leasing office, not your moving company.

Before you book, confirm:
- Whether a fuel surcharge applies to your route
- Whether your building or address might require a shuttle
- The exact stairs-fee cutoff, if any
- Whether bulky items (piano, safe, etc.) are already factored into your estimate
- What building move-in/move-out fees your leasing office charges separately
