Metro Atlanta to Boca Raton is about 619 miles by road—roughly 10 hours by car, mostly on I-75 and Florida’s Turnpike. A household move takes longer than that drive, costs more than a move to north Florida, and comes with a short list of Georgia and Florida deadlines you don’t want to miss.
This guide covers the route-specific part of the move: timing, cost, paperwork and what to arrange before the truck reaches Palm Beach County. For neighborhoods, condo rules and flood zones once you’re there, see our full Boca Raton moving guide.
The route and how long the move takes
Most routes run south on I-75 through Macon and Valdosta into Florida, then pick up Florida’s Turnpike near Wildwood for the long run down the peninsula to Palm Beach County. In a car, that’s a long single day.
A loaded moving truck won’t match your car’s pace. Commercial drivers work under federal hours-of-service limits, and a heavy truck makes fuel and weigh-station stops along the way. Most of our Georgia-to-Florida moves are completed in 1 to 4 days depending on the destination, and Boca Raton sits toward the longer end of that range.
Will your belongings ride on one truck with one crew, or be consolidated with other loads and transferred along the way? Transfers add handling and widen delivery windows. With Budget Moving Services, the same crew handles your pickup and delivery—no van-line handoffs.
“Boca Raton” isn’t always the City of Boca Raton
The City of Boca Raton had an estimated 101,582 residents in July 2025, but the Boca Raton mailing address covers far more ground than the city itself. Much of West Boca—including large country-club communities like Boca West—is in unincorporated Palm Beach County. The city itself notes that a Boca Raton address doesn’t necessarily mean you live within city limits.
That affects more than your tax bill:
- Water service: The city’s Utility Services Department serves addresses inside city limits plus portions of unincorporated Palm Beach County. Other West Boca addresses are on Palm Beach County Water Utilities.
- Beach access: Residents of the city and the Greater Boca Raton Beach and Park District can buy a resident permit covering Spanish River, Red Reef and South Beach parks. A Palm Beach County resident outside those areas gets South Beach access only.
- Move-in rules: In unincorporated master-planned communities, your HOA or master association—not the city—usually sets truck, gate and hours rules.
Check your new address against the city limits map on the City of Boca Raton’s website before you set up utilities or schedule delivery.
What a move from Atlanta to Boca Raton costs
These are the estimate ranges we publish for Georgia-to-Florida moves. Boca Raton is close to the longest Georgia-to-Florida run, which tends to push quotes toward the higher end of each range.
| Home size | Georgia to Florida estimate range |
|---|---|
| Studio / 1 bedroom | $1,400–$2,400 |
| 2–3 bedrooms | $2,800–$5,500 |

What moves your number up or down
- Volume and weight. The fastest way to lower a long-distance quote is to move less. Sell or donate before the estimate, not after.
- Packing. Full packing service adds labor and materials but shortens your last week in Georgia.
- Access at both ends. Stairs, long carries from the truck to the door, condo elevators and gated streets a full-size truck can’t navigate (which can require a smaller shuttle truck) all add time.
- Fuel surcharge. Long-distance quotes are tied to diesel prices at the time of the move.
- Storage in transit. If your Florida closing slips, storage holds your shipment until the home is ready.
- Your move date. Summer is peak moving season, and Boca’s winter season brings seasonal residents and busier building schedules.
Know your estimate type and your coverage
On an interstate move, federal rules give you two protections worth understanding before you sign:
- Binding vs. non-binding estimates. A binding estimate is the price you pay unless you add items or services. With a non-binding estimate, the mover can’t require more than 110% of the estimate at delivery; any remaining balance is billed later. Our Georgia-to-Florida moves come with binding written estimates.
- Full Value Protection vs. Released Value. Full Value Protection is the default unless you waive it in writing. Released Value costs nothing extra but covers only 60 cents per pound per article—a 50-pound TV would be covered for $30.
All prices on this page are estimates for planning only. Your actual price depends on your inventory, distance, access at both homes, move date and the services you choose. Fuel surcharges, shuttle fees, stairs fees and long carries are quoted based on conditions at your addresses—your written estimate lists them so there are fewer surprises on move day.
Atlanta vs. Boca Raton: what changes in your budget
Florida’s lack of a state income tax gets most of the attention, but housing is the bigger swing for most households moving from Atlanta to Boca.
| Measure | City of Atlanta | City of Boca Raton |
|---|---|---|
| Median home value | $439,600 | $722,700 |
| Median gross rent | $1,711 | $2,508 |
| State income tax (2026) | 4.99% flat | None |
Home value and rent: U.S. Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020–2024 (owner-occupied homes). Georgia rate as of January 1, 2026.
Insurance is the other line to price early. Coastal homeowners and flood coverage can be expensive, and insurers often ask for a 4-point inspection on older homes and give credits for a wind mitigation inspection. Get quotes before you sign a purchase contract, not after.
An 8-week timeline for the move
- 8 weeks out: get written estimates. Ask for in-home or video surveys, compare binding written estimates and pick dates with a buffer around your closing or lease start.
- 6 weeks out: get the Boca move-in rules. Call the HOA, condo association or property manager. Ask about move hours, elevator reservations, the certificate of insurance they need from your mover, gate access and truck-size limits, then send the details to your mover.
- 4 weeks out: set up utilities. Start FPL electric service and water with the city or county (depending on your address), and book internet installation. If you’re shipping a second car, schedule auto transport now.
- 2 weeks out: confirm and pack. Confirm the pickup date and delivery window in writing, pack an essentials box that rides with you, and line up storage in transit if your closing could slip.
- Move week: load and drive. Load in Atlanta, then drive down ahead of the truck so you’re at the Boca address with keys and gate or elevator approvals ready.
- First 30 days: Florida paperwork. Insurance, registration, driver license and homestead—see the next section.

Georgia and Florida paperwork deadlines
Leaving Georgia
- Keep Georgia auto insurance until your Florida policy starts.
- Cancel your Georgia registration with Form MV-18J at your county tag office before or at the same time you cancel Georgia insurance. Otherwise you can owe a $25 lapse fee plus a $60 reinstatement fee.
- File a USPS change of address and update your bank, employer and subscriptions.
Landing in Florida
- Buy Florida auto insurance (minimum $10,000 PIP and $10,000 property damage liability).
- Title and register within 10 days of establishing residency. First-time Florida registrations carry a $225 initial registration fee plus plate and title fees, and out-of-state vehicles need a VIN verification.
- Get a Florida driver license within 30 days.
| Task | Deadline | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Register vehicle | 10 days after establishing residency | Palm Beach County Tax Collector |
| Driver license | 30 days after establishing residency | Palm Beach County Tax Collector |
| Cancel GA registration | Before or with cancelling GA insurance | Your Georgia county tag office (Form MV-18J) |
| Homestead exemption | March 1 (own and live in the home on January 1) | Palm Beach County Property Appraiser |
| Beach parking permit | Optional; runs October 1 to September 30 | City of Boca Raton ($90 for eligible residents) |
Starting a job or enrolling kids in a Florida public school counts as establishing residency. Beach permits aren’t prorated, so buying one in the summer covers only a few months.

Delivery day in Boca Raton
Gated communities
Send the gate or management office your mover’s company name, truck details and delivery window in advance. Some communities limit truck size or set move hours, and a truck turned away at the gate burns time on a long-distance delivery.
Condos and high-rises
Expect to reserve an elevator, provide your mover’s certificate of insurance and work within set move hours. Our Boca Raton guide has a full list of questions to ask the building.
Truck access
A full-size long-distance truck may not fit tight residential streets, cul-de-sacs or low tree canopy. If it can’t reach your door, the crew transfers your belongings to a smaller shuttle truck. Send photos of the street and driveway during your estimate so it’s priced in up front.
Weather
Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, and summer afternoons bring fast-building thunderstorms. Plan morning deliveries, keep a buffer day and reschedule rather than unload into a storm.
Hiring an interstate mover
An Atlanta to Boca Raton move crosses state lines, so federal rules apply. Florida’s state mover registration covers moves that start and end inside Florida—not this one. Before you book:
- Look up the mover’s USDOT number with the FMCSA and confirm it’s authorized for interstate household goods. Ours is USDOT #3438801.
- Make sure you receive the “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move” booklet.
- Get a written estimate based on an in-home or video survey—not a phone guess.
- Be wary of large cash deposits, quotes far below everyone else’s, or a company name that doesn’t match its USDOT record.
