Moving for the First Time? Here’s What Nobody Tells You
Your first move is a milestone. It’s also overwhelming — not because any single task is hard, but because there are about fifty of them, and they all land in the same week.
Most first-time movers make the same mistakes. Not because they’re careless, but because nobody warned them. Consider this your warning.

Start Earlier Than Feels Reasonable
The number one mistake first-time movers make is starting too late.
If you’re moving in four weeks, you should already be decluttering, booking your moving company, gathering supplies, and notifying your landlord, utilities, and bank.
Six to eight weeks out is a comfortable runway. Four weeks is workable. One week is survival mode.
Declutter Before You Pack — Not After
Every item you own has to be boxed, carried, loaded, driven, unloaded, and unpacked. That’s a lot of handling for a broken lamp you haven’t used since 2019.
Sort everything into three piles: keep, donate or sell, and trash. Be honest about the “I might need it someday” items. Every box you don’t pack is money and time saved.
Get Real Quotes — Plural
Get at least three quotes, but don’t just compare prices. Ask:
- Are they licensed and insured?
- Do they offer an in-home or video survey, or just a phone estimate?
- Is the quote binding or non-binding?
- What’s included — packing, materials, disassembly, stair fees?
Red flag: Anyone who quotes you a price without seeing your home. That number is a guess, and you’ll pay the difference later.
Pack Smarter, Not Harder
- Heavy items in small boxes. Books in a giant box become a 60-pound problem.
- Label every box with the room and a short description.
- Pack one room at a time.
- Tape the bottom of every box. Twice.
- Take photos of electronics before unplugging them.
- Don’t pack valuables, documents, or medications — those travel with you.
Start with the rooms you use least. Save the kitchen and daily essentials for last.
Pack an Essentials Bag You Keep With You
This is the tip first-timers always wish they’d known.
Set aside one bag that stays with you — not on the truck:
- Medications
- Phone charger
- Change of clothes
- Toothbrush and toothpaste
- Snacks and water
- Important documents
- A box cutter and tape
- Pet food and leash, if applicable
When you arrive exhausted and the truck is still being unloaded, you’ll be able to brush your teeth and go to bed without digging through twenty boxes.
Don’t Forget the Boring Admin Stuff
Before you move, handle:
- Address change with USPS (two weeks ahead)
- Utilities — schedule shutoff and turn-on
- Internet and cable — book early, wait times can be weeks
- Bank, credit cards, insurance — update your address
- Voter registration and driver’s license
- Subscriptions — Amazon, streaming, anything with a shipping address
Make a checklist. This is the stuff that slips through the cracks and causes problems two months later.
What Move Day Actually Looks Like
- Movers usually arrive between 7am to 9:30 AM
- Loading takes 2 to 6 hours depending on home size
- There’s a lot of waiting, then a lot of activity, then more waiting
- Something will go slightly wrong. Roll with it
- You’ll be more tired than you expect
Take the day off work. Have water and snacks ready. Don’t schedule anything else that evening.
Protect Yourself With the Right Coverage
Basic released-value coverage is usually calculated by weight — often around 60 cents per pound per item. A 5-pound laptop damaged in transit might net you $3.
If your belongings are worth more, ask about full-value protection. It costs more, but it actually replaces what’s lost or damaged.
The First Night in Your New Place
Don’t try to unpack everything on night one. Instead:
- Set up beds first
- Get the bathroom functional
- Put food and water somewhere accessible
- Plug in your phone charger
- Order dinner
The boxes will still be there tomorrow.
