Moving is one of those things most people only do a handful of times in their lives. And that’s exactly why it’s so easy to get it wrong.
Choosing a residential moving company comes down to licensing, insurance, reviews and clear written pricing.
You don’t know what you don’t know. And in the moving industry, what you don’t know can cost you—money, time, and the safety of your belongings.
The good news? Choosing the right residential moving company doesn’t have to be complicated. You just need to know what to look for, what to ask, and which red flags to spot before you sign anything.
This guide covers exactly that. No fluff. No generic advice. Just a clear framework for finding residential movers who will actually show up, handle your things with care, and deliver on what they promised.
Why the Right Residential Movers Matter
Here’s the thing: not all moving companies are created equal.
Some are honest, hardworking operations that take pride in getting your furniture from point A to point B without a scratch. Others are what the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) calls “rogue” movers—companies that may try to take advantage of you through hidden fees, late deliveries, or outright fraud.
The best defense against moving fraud is being informed before you ever pick up the phone.
When you hire residential movers, you’re trusting them with essentially everything you own. Your couch. Your grandmother’s china. Your kids’ beds. That’s not a decision you want to make based on the cheapest Google result or the flashiest website.
What to Look for in Residential Movers
1. Proper Licensing and Insurance
This is the absolute non-negotiable. If a moving company can’t show you proper licensing, walk away.
For interstate moves, the FMCSA requires movers to have a U.S. DOT number. Every legitimate moving company should display both their MC number and USDOT number prominently on their website—usually at the bottom of the homepage.
Here’s how to verify it: take that DOT number and plug it into the FMCSA’s online database. You’ll see the company’s operating status. If it says “Authorized,” you’re good to go.
For moves within Georgia, requirements vary, but you should still ask for proof of licensing and check with the Georgia Department of Public Safety or your local consumer affairs office.
Insurance is just as important. Make sure your mover has both liability insurance and workers’ compensation. If a mover gets injured in your home and isn’t covered, that could become your problem.
2. A Written, In-Person Estimate
Any moving company that gives you a quote over the phone without seeing your stuff is guessing. And you don’t want to pay for a guess.
The FMCSA explicitly recommends getting a written estimate based on an actual in-person inspection of your household goods. This isn’t just good advice—it’s your best protection against surprise charges on moving day.
A good estimator will walk through your home, look in every closet and cabinet, and note any potential challenges like stairs, narrow doorways, or tricky parking situations.
Pro tip: Get estimates from at least three different residential moving companies and compare them side by side. Not just the total price—look at what’s included and what’s not.
3. Transparent Pricing and the 110% Rule
Here’s something most people don’t know: for interstate moves, movers are required by law to deliver your goods for no more than 10% above the price of a nonbinding estimate. This is called the 110 percent rule.
That means if you get a nonbinding estimate for $3,000, the mover can’t legally charge you more than $3,300 at delivery.
But here’s the catch—that only applies to interstate moves. For local moves within Georgia, the rules are different. That’s why it’s so important to get everything in writing and ask specifically about what happens if the move takes longer than expected or requires more labor.
At Budget Moving Services, residential moves start at $399+ with clear, transparent pricing and no hidden fees.
4. Strong, Recent Reviews
Reviews matter. But not all reviews are created equal.
When you’re looking at a moving company’s Google reviews, pay attention to:
- Recency: When were the reviews posted? A company with five great reviews from 2019 and nothing since is a red flag.
- Consistency: Are the reviews consistently positive, or is it a mix of five-star raves and one-star horror stories?
- Specificity: Do the reviews mention specific crew members, specific challenges, or specific outcomes? Generic “they were great” reviews are less trustworthy than detailed accounts.
- Response to negatives: How does the company respond to bad reviews? Do they apologize and try to make it right, or do they get defensive?
Budget Moving Services maintains a 4.9-star rating with 48 reviews and counting, with 6 to 8 new reviews coming in every month.
5. Experience With Your Type of Move
Not all residential moves are the same. Moving a three-bedroom house is different from moving a studio apartment. Moving from a walk-up in Buckhead is different from moving from a single-family home in Suwanee.
Make sure the residential movers you’re considering have specific experience with your type of move:
- Apartment moves: Do they handle stairs, elevators, and building move-in requirements?
- Townhome moves: Can they navigate tight hallways and multi-level layouts?
- Single-family home moves: Do they offer full-service packing, furniture disassembly, and room-by-room placement?
At Budget Moving Services, we handle all of these—from apartments and condos to townhomes and single-family homes across Lawrenceville, Buford, Duluth, Suwanee, Alpharetta, Roswell, and the rest of our service areas.
Questions to Ask Before Hiring Residential Movers
The team at Move.org, which has evaluated moving companies for over eight years, recommends asking these questions before signing anything:
1. Are you licensed through the FMCSA? And don’t just take their word for it—verify their USDOT number yourself.
2. Do you have a USDOT number and an MC number? These should be on their website. If they’re not, that’s a red flag.
3. Can you provide a written estimate? Get it in writing. Always.
4. What’s your policy on deposits? Some companies require deposits; others don’t. Make sure you understand the terms and conditions when you put money down for a moving deposit and understand the cancellation policy and refund policy just incase.
5. What happens if my items are damaged? Ask about their claims process before you need to use it.
6. Are your movers background-checked and trained? You’re letting these people into your home. You have a right to know who they are.
7. What’s your cancellation policy? Life happens. Make sure you know what happens if your plans change.

Red Flags to Watch Out For
Sometimes, the warning signs are obvious. Other times, they’re subtle. Here’s what to watch for:
🚩 No physical address, no google listing for their company, and little-to-no presence on the internet.
If a moving company doesn’t have a real office location or doesn’t have an address for their warehouse then that’s a problem. It’s not always bad, because now-a-days a lot of moving companies and other home service businesses can be remote-operations based on the services they off, with their only public address being a warehouse; and those are not typically opened to the public without an appointment. Budget Moving Services has one of their main warehouses and climate-controlled storage facilities at 1156 Old Norcross Rd, Lawrenceville, Georgia 30046
🚩 Demand for a large deposit upfront; only accepting cash, cashiers-check, wire transfer, or zelle as method of payment.
It’s normal for movers to request a deposit for their services upfront. This is how both parties have come to an agreement and are committed. A demand for 40-50% or more in cash or other types of certified funds BEFORE the move – with debit or credit cards not being allowed? That’s a red flag.
🚩 Unusually low estimate.
If one quote is dramatically lower than all the others, there’s usually a reason. And it’s rarely a good one.
🚩 No in-person moving estimates offered.
Any mover who gives you a binding moving estimate or a “firm price” for your move without seeing your belongings either in person, virtually, or at the very least in pictures is either inexperienced, dishonest, or does not care about properly evaluating the job. Which will lead to upcharges 100% of the times
🚩 Renting a truck with a different name.
If the moving company shows up in a rental truck, that’s not always a red flag – if you’re moving from a Studio-2 bedroom apartment that’s in the same city that could actually be a lot cheaper for both the customer and the moving company. That doesn’t mean they don’t own their own fleet, it could just be cheaper and make more sense to rent a 15-foot truck from U-Haul for a local apartment move instead of using the companies 26ft moving truck. That’s not necessarily a dealbreaker, but it’s worth asking about.
Residential Movers for Apartments, Townhomes, and Single-Family Homes
Different homes require different approaches. Here’s what to look for based on your specific situation:
For Apartment Movers
Apartment moves come with a number of unique challenges: stairs, elevators, loading dock restrictions, parking restrictions, and building policies that require companies to provide a copy of their COI before allowing the movers to use their freight elevators. Look for residential movers who:
- Have experience with apartment buildings in your area
- Understand building move-in requirements and elevator reservations
- Can handle tight hallways and small doorways
- Offer flexible scheduling that works around your building’s rules

For Townhome Movers
Townhomes often mean multiple levels and narrow staircases. Look for movers who:
- Have experience with multi-level moves
- Can handle furniture assembly and disassembly
- Are prepared for tighter parking situations
For Single-Family Home Movers
Full-house moves are the biggest residential moves. Look for moving companies in your city that:
- Provide various full-service moving and packing options
- Offer full-and-partial packing services, specialized packing (Dish Pack, Custom-Crating, Delicates/Antiques such as: Statues, Painting + Artwork)
- Provide full packing and unpacking services if you want the white-glove concierge full-service moving experience where quite literally everything is taken care of for you.
- Provide furniture wrapping and protection
- Furniture will be disassembled, reassembled, and reorganized room-by-room at delivery.
- Can handle specialty items like pianos or pool tables.
- Offer storage options with redelivery if your closing dates don’t align

The Bottom Line
Choosing residential movers doesn’t have to be stressful. The key is doing your homework before you need to move—not the night before.
Get multiple written estimates. Verify licensing and insurance. Read recent reviews. Ask the right questions. And trust your gut. If something feels off, it probably is.
The FMCSA puts it bluntly: “If you hire a mover based solely on the lowest price, you may be sacrificing other things that are actually more important, like getting your possessions moved safely and delivered on time.”
Price matters. But it’s not the only thing that matters.
