Moving to Stone Mountain, GA can mean two different things, and knowing the difference saves a lot of confusion. The City of Stone Mountain is a small historic village of about 6,600 people at the western base of the mountain. The much larger Stone Mountain area covers several ZIP codes of unincorporated DeKalb County, and even part of Gwinnett, that share the same mailing address.

Our Lawrenceville crews move families in and out of both every week. This guide combines U.S. Census Bureau data, City of Stone Mountain information, and our own moving-day experience, so you can decide whether living in Stone Mountain fits your budget, commute, and lifestyle.

Stone Mountain, GA at a Glance

  • City population: 6,562 (Census estimate, July 1, 2025); 6,703 in the 2020 Census
  • History: Incorporated as New Gibraltar in 1839 and renamed Stone Mountain around 1847
  • City size: About 1.66 square miles; locals call it Stone Mountain Village
  • Median home value: $206,400 inside city limits (Census ACS, 2020–2024)
  • Median gross rent: $1,540 per month
  • Median household income: $46,973
  • Average commute: 26.2 minutes one way
  • ZIP codes: 30083 and 30086–30088, which reach into unincorporated DeKalb and Gwinnett
  • Schools: DeKalb County School District

Where Is Stone Mountain, GA?

Stone Mountain sits in eastern DeKalb County along the Stone Mountain Freeway (US 78). The village touches the western base of the granite dome and Stone Mountain Park. Memorial Drive runs south of town toward Decatur and Atlanta, and the 19-mile Stone Mountain Trail, a paved multi-use path, connects downtown Atlanta to just outside the village.

Nearby cities include Tucker to the north, Clarkston to the west, Lithonia and Stonecrest to the south, and Gwinnett County’s Snellville and Lilburn to the east and north. That makes the Stone Mountain area a natural crossroads between DeKalb County and Gwinnett County.

Stone Mountain Village vs. the Stone Mountain area

This is the single most important thing to understand before you buy or rent. A Stone Mountain mailing address does not mean you live in the city. The city is less than two square miles, while ZIP codes 30083, 30087, and 30088 cover tens of thousands of residents in unincorporated DeKalb County, and 30087 extends into Gwinnett.

Why it matters: city residents pay city taxes and get city services, while unincorporated residents are served by DeKalb or Gwinnett County. School zones, trash pickup, and even which county you register your car in can all change. Always confirm the jurisdiction with the county tax assessor before you sign.

Is Stone Mountain, GA a Good Place to Live? Pros and Cons

Stone Mountain, GA offers some of the most affordable housing in DeKalb County, a historic downtown, and one of Georgia’s best-known outdoor destinations next door. Here is the balanced picture we share with customers.

Pros of living in Stone Mountain

  • Lower home prices. The median home value inside city limits is $206,400, well below the DeKalb County median of $357,800.
  • Stone Mountain Park next door. Hiking, the walk-up trail to the summit, lakes, and festivals are minutes away.
  • Historic village charm. Main Street shops and restaurants, older homes, and a walkable downtown.
  • Trail access. The Stone Mountain Trail and PATH connections serve walkers, runners, and cyclists.
  • Two counties to choose from. The wider area lets you compare DeKalb and Gwinnett schools and taxes without changing your general location.

Cons of living in Stone Mountain

  • Confusing boundaries. City, unincorporated DeKalb, and Gwinnett addresses look the same on paper.
  • Park traffic. Weekend events and holidays at Stone Mountain Park add cars to Memorial Drive and US 78.
  • Limited rail. No MARTA train runs to the village; Indian Creek is the nearest station.
  • Mixed housing condition. Older homes can need updates, so a thorough inspection matters.

Stone Mountain Neighborhoods and Housing

Inside the village, the Census Bureau counts about 2,700 housing units and 2,400 households, with 2.76 people per household. Roughly half of occupied homes are owned and half are rented. Outside city limits, the Stone Mountain area adds thousands of subdivision homes, townhomes, and apartment communities.

The historic village

Streets near Main Street hold older cottages, bungalows, and Victorian-era homes, some on hilly lots with steps up to the front door. Inventory is small, so homes here can sell quickly. Moves in the village often involve narrow streets and limited parking, which we plan for ahead of time.

Smoke Rise and the north side

North of US 78, the Smoke Rise area is known for larger homes on wooded lots, winding roads, and long driveways. Many of these homes carry a Stone Mountain address even though they sit closer to Tucker. Expect longer carries and sometimes a smaller shuttle truck when a full-size truck cannot reach the house.

South and east of the mountain

Toward Redan, Rockbridge Road, and the Gwinnett line, you will find 1970s through 2000s subdivisions, townhome communities, and many apartment complexes. These neighborhoods offer some of the best values for families who want a yard, while still living in Stone Mountain’s general orbit.

Cost of Living in Stone Mountain vs. Nearby DeKalb Cities

Inside city limits, Stone Mountain, GA has the lowest median home value of the DeKalb cities in our guides, and rent sits below the county median as well. Household incomes are also lower, which keeps the overall cost of living in Stone Mountain in line with what residents earn.

Keep in mind that these numbers describe the small incorporated city. Homes with a Stone Mountain address in unincorporated DeKalb or Gwinnett can be priced quite differently, so compare recent sales on your specific street.

Stone Mountain, GA Schools and Education

Inside the city, public schools are part of the DeKalb County School District. Stone Mountain Elementary School and Champion Theme Middle School sit within city limits, and students attend Stone Mountain High School just outside the city boundary.

Because the Stone Mountain address spans so much ground, nearby homes may be zoned to other DeKalb clusters or to Gwinnett County Public Schools. Look up every address you are considering with the district’s school locator. Our Gwinnett County guide and Snellville guide explain the Gwinnett side.

Getting Around Stone Mountain: Commutes and Transit

The average commute for Stone Mountain, GA city residents is 26.2 minutes one way, a bit faster than the county average. Main routes include:

  • US 78 (Stone Mountain Freeway) west to I-285, Tucker, and Decatur, and east toward Snellville
  • Memorial Drive toward Avondale Estates, Decatur, and downtown Atlanta
  • I-285 a few miles west for the airport, Perimeter Center, and the rest of the metro
  • Rockbridge Road and Hugh Howell Road for local trips around the area

MARTA bus routes serve the area, and Indian Creek, the eastern end of the Blue Line, is the nearest rail station. It sits off Durham Park Road with more than 2,000 parking spaces, so many commuters drive there and ride the train to Decatur, downtown, or Midtown.

Things to Do in Stone Mountain

Stone Mountain Park is the obvious headline for anyone living in Stone Mountain. The walk-up trail to the summit is about 1 mile and climbs 786 feet over bare granite, and the park’s longest hike, the Cherokee Trail, is a 5-mile loop. There are also 8 miles of sidewalks for walkers and joggers.

  • Main Street in the village: shops, cafes, and seasonal events within walking distance
  • Stone Mountain Trail: a 19-mile paved path toward Decatur and downtown Atlanta
  • Lakes and picnic areas: lakeside paths, fishing, and picnicking inside the park
  • Nearby shopping: the US 78 and Rockbridge Road corridors, plus the Mall at Stonecrest to the south

Setting Up Utilities and Services in Stone Mountain

Because the Stone Mountain area spans a city and two counties, the providers you call depend on your exact address. Sort this out a week or two before move-in so the lights, water, and internet work on day one.

  • Water and sewer: most DeKalb addresses, including the village, use DeKalb County Watershed Management, while Gwinnett addresses use Gwinnett County’s water department.
  • Trash and recycling: service and pickup days differ between the city, unincorporated DeKalb, and Gwinnett, so ask your closing agent or landlord which one applies.
  • Power and gas: Georgia Power or an electric membership cooperative supplies electricity depending on the street, and natural gas is sold through state-certified marketers.
  • Car registration and taxes: register your vehicle in the county where you live, not the county printed on an old mailing address.

New to Stone Mountain, Georgia from another state? You generally have 30 days after becoming a resident to get a Georgia driver’s license, so put that on your first-month to-do list along with voter registration and your homestead exemption if you bought a home.

What Our Stone Mountain Movers See on Moving Day

These are the details our Stone Mountain movers plan around most often when moving families to Stone Mountain, GA:

  • Village parking. Narrow streets and limited curb space near Main Street can mean a longer walk from the truck. Tell us about steps up to the front door.
  • Wooded, sloped lots. Smoke Rise and other hilly neighborhoods may need a shuttle truck if a large truck cannot reach the house safely.
  • Park event days. Big events at Stone Mountain Park slow Memorial Drive and US 78, so we try not to book moves on those days when we can.
  • Apartment rules. Many complexes require move reservations and certificates of insurance. Our guide to apartment moves with stairs covers what to expect.
  • County paperwork. If you are crossing from Gwinnett to DeKalb, or the reverse, update your car registration in the right county.

How Much Does Moving to Stone Mountain, GA Cost?

Local moves are usually billed by the hour for the crew and truck. Long-distance moves are priced by weight or volume and distance. For Stone Mountain moves, the biggest cost factors are:

  • The size of your home and how much you are taking
  • Stairs, hillside driveways, and the distance from the truck to your door
  • Packing services and materials
  • Bulky or specialty items
  • Drive time between addresses and the day you move

Pricing note: Every number you see for a move is an estimate until your inventory and both addresses are confirmed. Stairs fees, long carries, elevator waits, and travel time can change the final bill. Long-distance moves may also carry a fuel surcharge, and narrow streets or gated communities can require a shuttle truck and shuttle fee. Ask for a written estimate that lists all of these before you book.

Get a quick ballpark with our moving cost calculator, review our current prices, and compare hourly vs. flat-rate pricing. Flat-rate options near the south side are explained on our Stonecrest flat-rate movers page.
