First Apartment Move:
What Your Landlord Won’t Tell You
(But We Will)
So you signed the lease. Congratulations β you officially have a key, a credit check scar, and approximately zero idea what happens next. Don’t worry. We’ve helped thousands of first-timers move from the childhood bedroom to their first real apartment, and we’ve seen every mistake in the book. This is the first apartment moving checklist we wish somebody had handed us on day one.
Your landlord sent you a move-in packet. It covered the parking pass and when rent is due. It did not cover any of the stuff below. That’s what we’re for.
π Your First Apartment Moving Checklist
Split into three phases. Print it. Put it on your fridge. Actually use it β unlike that gym membership.
πΈ 3 Hidden Costs Nobody Warned You About
Your budget said “first month + security deposit.” Your actual move-in day said “hold my beer.”
Deposit Damage Risk
That security deposit is “refundable” β unless they find pre-existing damage you didn’t document. Without move-in photos, you’re paying for the last tenant’s mistakes.
Building Move-In Fee
Many apartment complexes charge $100β$500 just to use the loading dock or freight elevator on move day. It’s non-refundable and buried in the lease addendum on page 9.
Elevator Hold Deposit
Separate from the move-in fee β some buildings require $200β$400 to “hold” the service elevator for your window. Usually refunded, but ties up cash you planned to spend on a couch.

π Don’t Buy These β Rent Instead
Here’s the thing about moving equipment: you need it for exactly one day, it costs real money to buy, and then it lives in your new closet judging you. Rent it. Most moving companies and big-box hardware stores offer daily rental. Need extra hands too? Our hourly moving labor crews can load it all for you in a few hours.
π« Don’t Buy β Rent These Instead
If you hire a residential moving company, this is moot β they bring everything. But if you’re renting a truck and drafting friends, rent the equipment from the same place you rent the truck. One stop, one transaction, fewer surprises on move day.
One Last Thing About Those “Friends”
We love your friends. We’re sure they’re great. But “I’ll totally help you move” has roughly the same reliability as “I’ll Venmo you later.” People get sick. They forget. They show up two hours late smelling like last night. Plan for one person to flake β because statistically, one person will flake.
Have a backup plan before you need one. Know your truck rental’s cancellation window. Have the number of a moving company saved in your phone β even a small move goes smoother with backup on call. And if the couch absolutely has to be up three flights by 2pm regardless of who shows β give us a call first.
Actionable next step: Before you pack a single box, call your building manager and ask for every move-in fee and elevator policy in writing. Then get one binding estimate from a licensed mover β even if you plan to use friends. You’ll have a number, a backup, and actual leverage on move day. We’re proud Georgia movers serving the whole Metro Atlanta service area.
Your Friends Might Flake. We Won’t.
